Our monthly forums reflect the commitment of participants to spiritually-guided action, explore issues of concern to local and state governments and to the citizens of Lane County, Oregon, and bring folks together to work toward a better world.

Go Public with your Fire

I can hardly tear myself away from André Trocmé’s 180-plus page book, Jesus and the Nonviolent Revolution. 

Jesus, he writes, chose neither the path of violence nor withdrawal, but the "third way: a nonviolent love that commits itself to the redemption of the individual person."

Caught between the powers of Rome and the local religious thought police, Jesus turns his attention to one individual, a man with a withered hand.  In the Temple, on the Sabbath, in the presence of the watchdogs, Jesus breaks Sabbath rules to restore this man's dignity and ability to work. 

He chooses the third way, the way of transformative justice, to do something useful for someone in need.  In exchange, his own fate is sealed, always with Love. 

Jesus lived in the midst of his times:  aware, engaged, refusing to meet violence with violence, ever mindful of his mission to accomplish "on Earth, as in Heaven."  This is what "political" looks like:  fully, publicly, given to the greater good and the dignity of each one. 

In recent months I've spoken to you of the urgency of living with a nonviolent heart, and the discipline required to cultivate such a heart.  Why?  Because we're meant to be publicly engaged in the issues of our day, as Jesus was in his.  We're meant to be political--not partisan, but an engaged part of the body politic.  

We're meant to "go public with our fire."  Breaking a few rules along the way is to be expected.

Let's be fearless truth tellers, wisdom bearers, women of just and compassionate deeds.  Let's be light, and salt.  Deep systemic transformation depends on our willingness to speak truth to power.
